After nearly two years, Ajith Kumar is back with a theatrical release, Vidaamuyarchi. Initially planned for Pongal release, the movie got postponed, and it finally hit the screens yesterday (6th February). The movie reportedly got a massive opening. Here is a short review.
The movie starts off with Ajith as Arjun and Trisha as Kayal falling in love and ending up tying the knot. But after a few years, some incidents pave the way for their
separation and eventually proceeding for a divorce. Kayal tells Arjun that she will live with her parents until the proceedings get over. Arjun offers one last ride together to her parents house, which Kayal accepts. During their journey, their car breaks down, and they are struck in the middle of nowhere. Kayal gets kidnapped by a gang (Arjun and Regena Cassandra, namely Rakshith and Deepika). What happens next is what the whole movie is about. The initial 30 minutes of the movie were mostly used to show the chemistry between Ajith and Trisha along with the song Sawadeeka. After that, the movie's plot gets a roll involving some good twists and action sequences.
This movie is a partial remake of the 1990s Hollywood hit 'Breakdown'. However, Magizh has Indianised some of the elements in Vidaamurachi. Ajith is the backbone of the movie, putting out a great show. Performances from Trisha, Arjun, Regena, and Arav were also convincing. The making of the film, especially the cinematography by Om Prakash, makes it a Hollywood-level visual treat. Anirudh, as usual, has done a brilliant job. The biggest flaw lies in how Magizh handled the story. The baseline of why Arjun and Kayal decide to separate is never clearly showcased. This makes the film's emotional side very pale and twists not working out fully for its potential, eventually a disconnect from the audience. 'Breakdown' runs approximately 90 minutes, whereas Vidaamuyarchi runs around 150 minutes. Lengthy, unnecessary scenes could have been trimmed off, and proper reasoning could have made the movie a better watch. There are no typical commercial elements like 'mass scenes' or 'punch dialogues' for fans. The message the director tries to convey is that 'Love is not just romance' falls flat as the film never carried the emotions that support this statement. Furthermore, Kayal is in an affair with another person called Prakash, whose identity still remains a mystery for the audience to find out. One positive note from the film is that a big hero like Ajith has agreed to do a story-based film, ignoring his star value. The film got mixed reviews from day 1, and film analysts predict a lower-than-expected collection for Vidaamuyarchi.
