The announcement comes after the project’s opening was earlier expected around March 10, but was delayed following certain safety compliance requirements observed during inspection by the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS). During the inspection, it was noted that removal of shuttering at an obligatory span by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) was required to ensure full safety compliance. CMRL was given 24 hours to complete the work, after which the project received the necessary authorization.

With the clearance now in place, the railway administration has confirmed that services will begin on March 14, marking an important milestone for Chennai’s suburban rail network.

The extension will provide direct connectivity up to St. Thomas Mount, which serves as a key interchange connecting MRTS, Chennai Suburban Railway, and Metro Rail, thereby improving travel options for daily commuters.
