Summer Ends Early for Chennai: Get Ready for Surprise May Rains

Chennai’s peak summer usually stretches deep into May, but this year, residents across the city - and especially in areas like Nanganallur - are experiencing a cool surprise.

According to weather updates, the typical summer heat has come to an early end, with no heatwaves recorded so far and not a single 40°C day expected this month. This makes 2025 one of the rare years to follow a cooler May trend, alongside 2004, 2018, and 2022.

The change is being driven by an early formation of a shear zone - a weather pattern that typically appears only in late May or June. This year, however, it’s arrived by mid-May, pulling in easterly winds directly over Northern Tamil Nadu, including the Chennai coastal zone (KTCC - Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu).

As a result, rain chances have gone up sharply for areas like Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu. Nanganallur residents can expect light to moderate showers over the weekend, bringing much-needed relief from the heat.

Weather experts are also monitoring possible low-pressure formations in both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, with one of them potentially intensifying into a cyclonic storm in the coming days.
