Police Issue Strong Advisory After Laser Light Incident Near Airport

St. Thomas Mount Police called for an urgent meeting with Local associations, Function hall owners and Flat associations; urge public vigilance and compliance with aviation safety norms

In response to a serious safety concern, police officials from the St. Thomas Mount Station convened an urgent meeting on Monday evening, following reports that a laser light beam was pointed at an Emirates flight during its landing approach at Chennai airport on Sunday night. While the motive and the individual responsible remain unknown, a video of the incident has surfaced, prompting swift action from law enforcement. According to aviation protocols, the use of laser beams is strictly prohibited within a 5-kilometre radius of any airport, due to the risk it poses to pilots during critical phases of flight.

"Laser lights, though used casually in events, can cause major distractions to pilots, especially during takeoff and landing,” said Assistant Commissioner Mr. Murali.

“The public must understand that this is not a small issue. It’s a question of hundreds of lives onboard. Even accidental misuse can have dangerous consequences.”

“Such activities are strictly banned within a 5-km radius of any airport. We request everyone to inform their communities and event organizers.”

“If you notice any such activity or suspicious behavior, immediately call 100 or alert the nearest police station.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr. Murali - St Thomas Mount and Inspector of police Mr. Balan (S1 police station) addressed the meeting, which was attended by heads and representatives of various residents’ welfare associations and function hall owners from Nanganallur and surrounding areas. Speaking at the meeting, The officials said -

The officers also stressed the responsibility of function hall owners and local associations to educate their members about the risks involved.

This advisory holds particular importance in a growing urban area like Nanganallur, where events and gatherings are common. The timely action and well-structured presentation by Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr. Murali and Inspector of Police (S1 Station) Mr. Balan were widely appreciated by the attendees, and helped convey the seriousness of the issue effectively.
