The All India BSNL Pensioners’ Welfare Association (AIBSNL-PWA), Tamil Nadu Circle, celebrated its 17th Annual Day in PAZAVANTHANGAL, Chennai yesterday with a meaningful program that blended tradition, reflection, and compassion.

The event began with a devotional invocation by Smt. Chellammal, setting a reverent tone. State. Vice President R Venkatachalam warmly welcomed the gathering, recalling the association’s efforts over the years to safeguard pensioners’ welfare. The stage was further graced by V LATHA Assistant Treasurer CHQ, who praised the dedication of members, especially women pensioners, in keeping the forum active and vibrant. Tamil Nadu State Advisor Mr. V Rama Rao took the dais and gave a speech on history of the Association and the dedication of the members and their activities. Then, All India Head DG gave his speech.

In his keynote, DG, senior leader of the association, retraced the journey of the pensioners’ movement. He reminded members how it began in Chennai as a struggle for justice, eventually achieving several settlements for retired employees.

He acknowledged that challenges remain, especially in the pending court case for pension revision, but expressed firm confidence that collective efforts will lead to favorable outcomes. His message emphasized unity above all:

“Once retired, there are no divisions — all are one.”

By slightly shortening his otherwise elaborate speech, the essence of his message stood out — persistence, hope, and unity.

A Guest Who Embodies Humanity

The chief guest of the evening was Khaalid Ahamed, founder of Uravugal Trust, a service organization that rescues and performs the final rites of unclaimed and abandoned bodies with dignity. His speech struck a deep chord with the audience, reminding everyone that service to the departed is one of the highest forms of compassion. Many in the hall compared his selfless work to that of saints and described him as a “Mother Teresa in a man’s form.”

As part of the felicitation, the association honored Khaalid Ahamed for his relentless commitment to humanity.

Nanganallur Connect also had the opportunity to record an exclusive video interview with him.

Adding to the appreciation, V. Subramani (Yeri Kaatha Ramar - ஏரி காத்த ராமர்) from Green Foundation lauded Ahamed’s vision and service, stating that society needs more such inspiring individuals who silently uphold human dignity.

Support from Within the Community

The association also demonstrated its commitment in a practical way. A portion of the support raised, including contributions from the Traffic District (Rs 10000 from and an additional Rs 13700 from the members present during the event), has already been put to use by Uravugal Trust to purchase kumkum and other essential materials required for conducting last rites. This gesture ensured that contributions directly translated into meaningful support for rituals and traditions.

Senior Citizens Forum representative G Ravindran too assured his support for the noble cause, reflecting a sense of solidarity among senior citizens and pensioners’ groups.

Personal Testimonies

The evening was also made poignant by Venkataramani, who shared his personal experience of how Uravugal Trust extended timely help during the passing of his mother. His heartfelt words reminded everyone that noble work like this goes far beyond statistics or recognition - it touches lives directly, offering solace during the hardest of times.

More Than an Anniversary

The 17th Annual Day was not just a celebration of the past. It became an occasion to reaffirm shared values - compassion, solidarity, and the belief that service to humanity must continue hand in hand with the welfare of pensioners.

---

The evening concluded with gratitude, applause, and a renewed spirit among members - proving once again that the strength of a community lies not just in what it achieves for itself, but also in how it uplifts others.
