Indian Railways Implements New Policy to Control Overcrowding

Indian Railways has announced that only passengers with confirmed tickets will be allowed entry at 60 high-footfall railway stations across the country. This measure is aimed at reducing congestion, improving passenger experience, and enhancing safety at busy stations.

The restriction will be enforced at 60 of the busiest railway stations, including: New Delhi Railway Station (Delhi), Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (Mumbai), Howrah Junction (Kolkata), Chennai Central (Chennai) and Bengaluru City Railway Station (Bengaluru).

Additional stations may be included in the future based on crowd management requirements.

Reason for the New Rule

Many railway stations witness heavy footfall, not just from travelers but also from those accompanying them. This often leads to overcrowding, making it difficult to manage passenger movement efficiently. By allowing only confirmed ticket holders, Indian Railways aims to create a more organized and safer environment.

Impact on Passengers

While this policy may cause initial inconvenience, officials believe it will streamline operations and ensure a smoother boarding process. Passengers are advised to book their tickets in advance and arrive at the station only if they have a confirmed reservation. Friends and Family accompanying the passenger(s) are advised to send off the ticketholder in the waiting area itself.

Steps Toward Better Crowd Control

The decision comes after recent concerns over overcrowding at railway stations, including incidents where excessive crowd buildup led to disruptions. Authorities expect this new policy to significantly reduce such occurrences and improve station management.
