What we all feared has arrived and the beginning impact itself is a big bang. Yes, the fuel crisis. First victim of the war is LPG leading to closure of eateries in metros like Mumbai and Bengaluru, while some hotels in Chennai city are trimming their menus to tackle and tide over the unprecedented blow. In Nanganallur, the situation does not seem to be alarming. Enquiries with Murugan Idli Shop revealed that right now they have adequate stock of LPG, so they are not contemplating any cut on the menu or crisis management plans.

As on Tuesday, other hotels in the area are also not in the crisis zone. But all of them are holding unscheduled meetings even during the business hours to constantly review the stock position and to cut some dishes which are high in LPG consumption, and also decide remedial measures, according to some stakeholders in Nanganallur.

To handle the prevailing precarious situation, households must be very judicious in LPG usage. Owing to the short supply, the government has also increased the interval period for booking for LPG cylinder from 21 days to 28 - from 3 weeks to 4 weeks. If the war spills over into April, the crisis will worsen resulting in significant hike in domestic LPG cost, which was recently increased by around Rs 60, say industry stakeholders.
