Pick the Best and Bright Fabric for Festival Joy
A Special Feature article about Deepavali Dresses

Rajesh’s other tips include quality of stitching and the points where they have to be checked. Thoroughly the see internal seams and stitching lines. Good clothes will have tight stitches without any loose threads or gaps between the knots. Slightly pull the cloth on both sides of the stitches to know the strength of stitching. Points like belt loops and pocket corners are must-check areas.
Similarly check the buttons and the stitches beneath it and zips by moving them up and down twice or thrice. Check the shoulder joint stitches and length of the sleeve.
In case of trousers (pants) during trials, sit and stand after wearing it. If you feel tightness in the chest and thighs, try some other models.
Festive wear that pulls too tight across the chest, shoulders or thigh will restrict movement and will tear under tension, warns Rajesh.
Silk sarees
In case of silk sarees, Yuvaraj, a silk saree weaver and seller in Kancheepuram, says basic thing to confirm the genuineness of silk is to look for the hologram label and unique identification number issued by the Silk Mark Organisation of India.
Such label many not be available with small vendors. In such cases, check for traditional varieties like Kanchipuram silk, which will have the GI tag.
Real silk when touched gives you a warm and smooth feel in your hands or body. Artificial or synthetic silk feels cold, slick, or sticky. Also, when rubbed gently on the two sides of saree a subtle sound like a scratching a paper can be heard. In case of artificial or synthetic fibres, this sound will be absent.
Another major confirmation is that the weight of silk sarees can be felt. If they feel light in weight then go for the next choice.
The weave also can be a good reality check. In handwoven pure silk, the design and motifs on the reverse side show light and some irregularities. The pallu should join the body correctly without any error or mismatch if it is a saree of real silk.
The final test can be the quality of zari. Real or tested zari has dim gold or silver glow. A bright and strong reflection may be imitation, explains Yuvaraj pointing out that genuine traditional zari features a silver or copper core blended in gold lining.

More than delectables (sweets & savouries) and decibels (crackers & sparklers), dress dominates everyone’s interest and choice. Attire makes a person’s appearance attractive and draws attention of all.
With Deepavali around the corner, everyone will be busy thronging their favourite apparel stores. Many have a habit of purchasing all at one go for the entire year during this festival owing to the variety and choice.
Choosing the best and attractive dresses is a unique skill. Still, it needs some guidance to get the right quality. Rajesh, a salesman with a popular textile outlet in heart of south Chennai, says first thing to be checked is the quality of fabric. See the cloth preferably in sunlight or under proper lighting environment. If it is too transparent then the weave is loose and thin and not tightly knitted.
A good fabric must have more percentage of natural fibres like cotton and silk or wool. For this you can check the contents mentioned in the label. The above mentioned fibres help ventilation and wearing comfort for the users or slightly blended fabrics that can give long life to the cloth.
Senthil, employee of an export firm, suggests a wrinkle test to confirm the strength of the cloth. He says hold the cloth between two fingers and drag it like a line from top to bottom. If the line, that is wrinkle, stays for little longer time, then try the next dress of your choice. “We call this squeeze or stretch test,” he says, adding, “If shopping for knits or heavy festive wear, check the GSM (grams per square metre) if available. A higher GSM means a denser, weightier fabric.”
