MTC to add 600 Electric buses by next month

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has announced plans to significantly expand its electric bus fleet, with 600 new electric buses set to hit the roads by March 2025. This ambitious initiative aims to modernize public transport in the city, improve air quality, and provide a more sustainable and eco-friendly commuting experience for Chennai residents.

This substantial addition to the existing fleet will be followed by further expansion, with an additional 650 electric buses planned for introduction by 2026. These new buses will play a crucial role in enhancing the city's public transportation infrastructure and providing more efficient and reliable services to commuters.The public has responded enthusiastically to this announcement, with many residents expressing support for this initiative. As on 31 December 2024, The total size of fleet of the MTC is 3688, of which 3492 buses are operated every day on an average. MTC operates over 5000 services daily covering about 830 routes.
