India started their three-match ODI series against England with a commanding four-wicket win in the first match held on February 6, 2025. The match saw a few surprises, including the absence of Virat Kohli due to a knee injury and the debut of young talents Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harshit Rana. England, after choosing to bat first, were bowled out for 248 in 47.4 overs, thanks to a strong display by Team India's Bowling unit.

England had an explosive start, led by Phil Salt, who played an aggressive knock, putting the Indian bowlers under pressure. He received solid support from Ben Duckett, as the duo built a crucial partnership. However, the momentum shifted when Shreyas Iyer produced a brilliant run-out to dismiss Salt, which turned out to be the game-changing moment. Soon after, Jaiswal took a stunning catch, and England lost their third wicket just before the first powerplay ended. Joe Root, who rejoined England’s white-ball squad, failed to make an impact. Captain Jos Buttler stepped up and used his experience to guide the innings with a fighting half-century. Jacob Bethell played a composed innings, scoring a well-crafted fifty, which provided a much-needed stability for England.

However, Ravindra Jadeja’s exceptional spell put England on the back foot. His accurate length and sharp turn helped him pick crucial wickets, including his 600th in international cricket. Later, Mohammed Shami, making a return after the 2023 World Cup, also made an impact by grabbing a wicket with his skiddy deliveries. England’s innings collapsed at 248 in the 48th over. In reply, India’s chase began with a promise as debutant Jaiswal played some delightful strokes but fell early to a brilliant delivery from Jofra Archer.

Rohit Sharma’s struggles continued as he was dismissed cheaply, extending his poor form. However, Shreyas Iyer counter-attacked brilliantly, playing elegant shots and unsettling England’s bowlers. Vice-captain Shubman Gill provided steady support, initially anchoring the innings before shifting gears. Iyer reached a well-deserved half-century but threw his wicket away with a poor shot.

In a surprising move, Axar Patel was promoted up the order, and he capitalised on the opportunity with a fluent fifty, playing stylish drives and lofted shots. Gill displayed immense maturity, battling cramps while crafting a match-winning 87. He fell short of a century but ensured India was in a commanding position. Hardik Pandya and Jadeja finished the chase comfortably, sealing the victory for the Indian cricket team with 68 balls to spare.

Shubman Gill was named Man of the Match for his composed and match-winning knock. With this victory, India takes a 1-0 lead in the series, setting the stage for an exciting second ODI.
