In the highly anticipated fifth match of the Champions Trophy, India secured a dominant six-wicket victory over Pakistan, further cementing their position at the top of Group A. The stadium was a sea of blue and green jerseys, with passionate fans from both nations cheering their teams. Several Indian cricketing legends were also present, adding to the electrifying atmosphere.
Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first, but they struggled to find momentum early on. Babar Azam, after a cautious start, attempted to accelerate but fell to India’s star all-rounder Hardik Pandya. By the end of the powerplay, Pakistan had lost another key wicket, adding to their troubles.
Captain Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel then steadied the innings, playing with patience to take the game deep. However, just as they looked set, both batters were dismissed in quick succession, leaving Pakistan under pressure. Khushdil Shah provided some late resistance, playing an important knock to push Pakistan to a total of 241 runs.
India’s chase began with captain Rohit Sharma giving the team a strong start. He kept the scoreboard ticking before falling to a brilliant inswinging yorker by Shaheen Afridi. Virat Kohli then took charge alongside Shubman Gill, who played elegant strokes against the Pakistani pacers. Gill looked set for a half-century but was undone by a sharp delivery from leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed.
With Kohli holding one end, Shreyas Iyer came in and played a responsible knock, rotating the strike effectively and accelerating when needed. He reached a well-made half-century before Hardik Pandya arrived at the crease, bringing explosive energy to the innings. His aggressive hitting raised concerns that Kohli might not reach his century, but Pandya fell before he could finish the game.
Axar Patel ensured Kohli got the strike in the final moments, and the Indian maestro completed his 51st ODI century in style, finishing the match with a boundary. His unbeaten innings also marked his 82nd international century. India won convincingly by six wickets with 45 balls to spare, delivering a commanding performance against their arch-rivals.
This emphatic victory keeps India unbeaten and firmly at the top of Group A, showcasing their strength as title contenders. The team will now look to maintain this momentum as the tournament progresses.
