IIT Madras Develops 'Kaatru' for Real-Time Air Quality and Road Condition Monitoring

A research group from IIT Madras has introduced 'Kaatru' (meaning 'air' in Tamil), an IoT and Data science based technology system designed to monitor air quality and road conditions in real time. This device, mounted on vehicle rear-view mirrors, collects environmental data and provides optimized routes for drivers, reducing pollution exposure and vehicle wear and tear.

Equipped with sensors, vehicle diagnostics, and an internal measurement unit, Kaatru benefits individual drivers, cab services, and policymakers by offering dynamic insights into air quality and road conditions. The system continuously gathers spatio-temporal air quality data, helping create hyperlocal pollution maps.

Showcased recently at the IIT Madras R&D Fair, Kaatru is expected to play a crucial role in shaping cleaner urban mobility and informed traffic management.
