Pillayar Chathurthi, Vinayagar Chathurthi or Ganesh Chathurthi is one among the few festivals that is celebrated by the entire country and devotees of Ganapathi on the same day. Notably, this celebration also is part of the India’s Freedom Movement – thanks to Marata Lion Balgangadhar Tilak, who used the occasion to spread the message of patriotism and to gain Independence from Colonial rulers.

On this auspicious day, Nanganallur Connect carried out a random survey of Lord Vinayagar’s presence across Nanganallur and found out the following five interesting facts:

Number of Vinayagar temples

There are around 250 temples, including those on walls at trijunctions, roadside single shrines (one sannidhi) and on walls, approximately all over Nanganallur.

Siddhi and Buddhi not present

There is no temple with Vinayagar accompanied by his two consorts – Siddhi and Buddhi, wives of the Lord as per legend – across Nanganallur.

Oldest temples

Two temples, one near the First Main Road and the other near the Modern Senior Secondary School, are said to be the oldest (opened sometime in early 1960s) among Vinayagar shrines in Nanganallur, according to longtime residents and old-timers.
