Chennai Welcomes First AC Electric Local Trains

Southern Railway has introduced first Air-Conditioned Electric Multiple Unit (AC EMU) Trains on the Chennai Beach - Chengalpattu corridor, commencing operations on April 19, 2025. These Modern trains aim to provide a comfortable and efficient travel experience for suburban commuters. The AC EMU trains will not run on Sundays. (Photo Credits - CNBC)

Station Stops and Coverage:

Trains 49003/49004 and 49005/49006 cover key stations including: Chennai Fort, Chennai Park, Chennai Egmore, Mambalam, Guindy, St. Thomas Mount, Tirusulam, Tambaram, Perungalattur, Guduvancheri, Potheri Halt, Singaperumal Koil, Paranur, and Chengalpattu.

Trains 49001/49002 have additional halts including: Chetpet, Nungambakkam, Kodambakkam, Saidapet, Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram Sanatorium – and notably – Pazhavanthangal and Minambakkam. These two stations are only served by 49001 and 49002, making them crucial options for air travelers and local residents.

Pazhavanthangal Timings -
Beach to Tambaram - 20:07 / 20:08 (Arrival / Departure)
Tambaram to Beach - 06:02 / 06:03 (Arrival / Departure)

Minambakkam Timings -
Beach to Tambaram - 20:10 / 20:11 (Arrival / Departure)
Tambaram to Beach - 05:59 / 06:00 (Arrival / Departure)

Fare Details:

The fares are ranging from ₹35 to ₹105 depending on distance. However, it is important to note that First Class pass holders are not eligible to board the AC EMU services, and separate tickets must be purchased.

Train 49005 – Chennai Beach to Chengalpattu: Departs at 3:45 PM, arrives at 5:25 PM.

Train 49006 – Chengalpattu to Chennai Beach: Departs at 5:45 PM, arrives at 7:15 PM.

Evening/Morning Short Route Service:

Train 49001 – Chennai Beach to Tambaram: Departs at 7:35 PM, arrives at 8:30 PM.

Train 49002 – Tambaram to Chennai Beach: Departs at 5:45 AM, arrives at 6:45 AM.
