New Zealand kicked off their Champions Trophy campaign in style, defeating Pakistan by 60 runs in the tournament’s opening match (National Stadium in Karachi). Pakistan opted to bowl first after winning the toss, considering the potential impact of dew in the second innings.

The Kiwis got off to a steady start, with Will Young looking in fine touch. However, a sudden collapse saw them lose three quick wickets, putting them on the back foot. Just when things looked shaky, Tom Latham and Will Young stepped up, both scoring superb centuries to steady the innings. Their partnership provided the perfect platform for a big total. Towards the end, Glenn Phillips' quickfire knock added the finishing touches, pushing New Zealand to a formidable 320 runs.

For Pakistan, leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed stood out with his tight lines, while Naseem Shah impressed with two crucial wickets. Haris Rauf also picked up two wickets but was expensive, conceding 83 runs. Meanwhile, Shaheen Afridi had an off day, struggling to create an impact with the new ball.

Chasing 321, Pakistan faced an early setback when Fakhar Zaman couldn't open due to an injury. This forced Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel to step in as openers. New Zealand’s pace attack was disciplined, with Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke keeping things tight in the powerplay. Pakistan’s captain, Mohammad Rizwan, walked in at No. 3 but was dismissed early after a stunning catch from Glenn Phillips, leaving Pakistan in trouble.

Babar Azam held the innings together, while Fakhar Zaman, despite his injury, played some aggressive strokes but couldn’t capitalize on his start. The real fight came from Salman Agha and Khushdil Shah, who launched a counterattack to keep hopes alive. Salman chipped in with a crucial 41, while Khushdil Shah’s 69 gave Pakistan a late boost. However, with the required run rate climbing, the chase eventually fizzled out, and Pakistan fell short by 60 runs.

With this victory, New Zealand have made a strong statement in the tournament, while Pakistan now find themselves in a must-win scenario against India. With their arch-rival showdown up next, the stakes couldn’t be higher!
