Anna Nagar Tower Park to be Renovated

GCC (Greater Chennai Corporation) is set to renovate the popular Anna Nagar Tower Park at a cost of ₹12 crore

Anna Nagar Tower Park (officially known as Dr. Visvesvaraya Tower Park), a popular spot for Chennaites, is set to undergo renovation. GCC (Greater Chennai Corporation) has reportedly allocated ₹12 crore for the project and will soon invite tenders from contractors. The 15-acre park, built in 1968, was not properly maintained and is now getting ready for a rebirth.

The renovation project includes key aspects such as

  • Increasing the number of trees from 450 to 600

  • New fountains

  • LED lighting for the 12-storey tower

  • Anti-skid tiles

  • Additional benches

  • Pond resotoration

  • Amphitheatre with a capacity of 50 seats

  • Multilevel Parking

  • Restoration of toilet blocks with proper water supply

  • Upgradation of play equipment

  • Additional workers, including security guards

Tower Park, built as a part of the Indian International Trade and Industries Fair in 1968, was inaugurated by then Vice-President of India V. V. Giri in the presence of the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C. N. Annadurai, on 21 January 1968. It is named after engineer and administrator Visvesvaraya.

The park was renovated at a cost of ₹6.2 crore in 2010 and was later closed in 2011 for various reasons, including public nuisance. It was once again renovated in 2018 at a cost of ₹44 lakh. Following the installation of new safety features, the park was reopened for public visits on 21 March 2023.
