Andha Naal Nyabagam! A Ride Into the History of AGS Colony!

Gomathi Mami’s journey is filled with memories of friendship, togetherness, and community-building in the heart of Nanganallur.

In a quiet street of AGS Colony, nestled among trees and timeworn homes, lives a woman whose memories stretch back to when this very colony was just barren land and big dreams. Gomathi Mami, now one of the oldest living residents of AGS Colony, opens a window into the past that many have never seen — but all of Nanganallur stands on.

Gomathi Mami shares her experiences exclusively to Nanganallur Connect!

Beyond these warm ties, Mami played an active role in shaping the colony’s future. One of her proudest achievements was helping Modern School extend its education offering to 11th and 12th standard — a rare feat in those days. “People thought it was enough to stop at 10th. But we believed our children deserved more. A group of us went from department to department, requesting, petitioning, explaining — until we finally got approval. A special thanks to PC Vaiydanadhan (PCV Mama) who did a lot for the establishment and functioning of Modern School", Mami recalls.

One of the most powerful examples of her grit came during the drainage system initiation. Back then, there was no underground drainage. Mami remembers how a group of residents, including herself, took matters into their own hands. “We went house to house, collected money from every family, and pooled enough funds to present to the government. It wasn’t easy. We followed officials, submitted petitions, and only after months of persistence did the project finally begin.

She moved here in 1967 along with her husband Krishnan. “There were no roads, no water connection, nothing. But there was hope, and people who believed in building something great,” she recalls.

The first to believe was L. Ramasubramanian, who moved in around 1964 with his wife V. Ramasubbalakshmi, widely respected and fondly called by many as LRS and VRS. They were deeply involved in community matters too. Mami fondly refers to LRS as “the guiding light of AGS Colony.” She says, “He set the tone for what this colony became, right from the layout to the level it has achieved today!"

After Mami and her husband Krishnan settled down, the two families became extremely close. “We didn’t even have fences between our houses. Our children played together. We shared meals. We lived like one big joint family,” she smiles. “It wasn’t friendship — it was family.”

She also reminisces about the early days of healthcare access in the locality. “There were no clinics nearby. We had to go far even for small treatments. Slowly, small centres came up, and we worked hard to support them.” Another cherished milestone was the establishment of the Vinayagar Temple, a spiritual anchor for the colony.

With an exceptional memory and a quiet pride in her voice, Gomathi Mami isn't just remembering history — she lived it, and helped shape it. She represents a generation that didn’t wait for change — they created it with whatever they had.

But Maami’s story isn’t just a one-off interview.

It’s the first glimpse into a much deeper journey — our upcoming secret project that unearths the stories of Nanganallur, its places and memories.

Because the past isn’t gone.
It’s just waiting to be told.

Nanganallur Connect thanks Gomathi Mami for her valuable time spent with us!
